A plosive is a consonant made by completely blocking and then releasing the airflow.

All natlangs contain plosives; it is sometimes said that all languages have at least three of /p t k ?/, though this is at best a statistical universal. Unvoiced plosives are more common than voiced ones; plosives are also commonly modified in other ways, such as aspiration, labialisation or glottalisation.

The IPA has symbols for the following plosives (each pair are given in the order unvoiced then voiced):

IPA X-Sampa
Bilabial /p b/ /p b/
Coronal /t d/ /t d/
Retroflex /ʈ ɖ/ /t` d`/
Palatal /c ɟ/ /c J\/
Velar /k g/ /k g/
Uvular /q ɢ/ /q G\/
Epiglottal /ʡ/ />\/
Glottal /ʔ/ /?/
