Euroclone

The term euroclone is used within the conlanging community to describe a language that imitates the patterns—particularly phonological and grammatical—of the many languages of Europe, often at the exclusion of outside influences. Common elements include the use of a masculine/feminine gender system, case and gender agreement on adjectives, and fusional morphology.

In many cases this pattern proves highly restrictive, limiting the scope and range of ideas in a constructed language, and perhaps even tinged with a dismissal of non-Western languages. Indeed, some have alleged that it may represent a hold-over form the time when most, even in linguistic circles, held European languages to be superior to all others. When well-executed by a knowledgeable creator, however, the results can be very good. J.R.R. Tolkien, widely considered a 'patron saint' of conlanging, made extensive use of euroclones, and did so so very well and famously that many euroclones today are often derivative of his work.
