The Constructed Languages List, more commonly referred to as CONLANG-L, is a mailing list devoted to the discussion of conlangs. It is hosted at Brown University, and the owner, who is colloquially referred to as the Lord of the Instrumentality of Conlang, is Henrik Theiling.

It is customary to prefix posts with descriptive markers, such as OT and CHAT, though most list participants do not adhere to this custom.

Common discussions

  • OT - The majority of messages on the list do not pertain in any way to the art of conlanging.
  • YAEPT: Yet Another English Pronunciation Thread - These discussions generate thousands upon thousands of messages, much to the dismay of a small, yet vocal minority of list readers. A similar phenomenon is found on the ZBB.
  • Linguistics - ...
  • Conlangs - The occassional member, at an attempt to revive the good old times, actually posts about their conlang. One such example is Teoh, who often keeps the list updated on his new conlang Tatari Faran

CXS

Conlang X-Sampa is an ASCII transcription scheme for writing IPA in e-mail messages, as certain e-mail clients lack the appropriate unicode. It was originally proposed on the Conlang-L mailing list as a compromise for several different unofficial transcription systems, such as X-SAMPA or Kirshenbaum. CXS is a not a hard and fast transcription series, owing to the fact that it is a collaborative scheme, and so varies in permutations.

Many features of Z-SAMPA were inspired by CXS.
